Why visiting the dentist regularly is important

When was the last time you took a trip to the dentist?

If it was more than six months ago, ask yourself why you haven’t been, because your oral health could be at risk.

By visiting the dentist you are maintaining your healthiest smile, as the dentist will be able to pick up on dental concerns that you may miss. The dentist’s priority is to help you maintain healthy teeth and gums.

You may be cleaning twice a day, flossing and rinsing your mouth, however this is not a substitute for visiting the dentist. Even if you have the healthiest smile, you must visit the dentist, because it’s a major part of your oral care.

Dental visits should occur at least every six months or more often if instructed by your dentist.

What happens at your dental visit?

During your dental visits, the dentist will check for oral health issues and then clean your mouth.

During the checkup, the dentist will have a look inside your mouth for cavities, signs of tartar, gum disease, oral cancer signs and other risks.

The dentist has the tools to check every area of your mouth, including each tooth, between the teeth, depth of spaces between the gums and teeth, tongue, throat, neck and face.

You will most likely also have dental x-rays taken to have a more indepth look for cavities, abnormalities or other problems.

If an issue is found, sometimes it can be fixed during your checkup, however you will most likely have to return for a treatment.

During dental checkup, you will also have a professional clean from the dentist. The clean will include scaling, polishing and fluoride treatment to help keep your teeth healthy and strong.

Children’s dental check-ups

Taking your child to the dentist within six months of the first tooth eruption or by 12 months old. This will ensure the dentist can begin looking for signs early on and also get to know your child.

The earlier your child begins dental visits, the less likely they will grow to fear dentists.

The dentist can provide parents with diet and dental hygiene recommendations. Issues regarding crowding, missing or crooked teeth can also be addressed.

Benefits of visiting the dentist

There are many benefits for visiting the dentist, including:
