Dental bridges can replace one or more missing teeth
At Access Dental Care in Perth, we offer a range of restorative treatments to help keep your smile healthy. One of those treatments is a dental bridge. This is a permanent fixture anchored to the adjacent natural teeth to bridge the gap where the tooth is missing. An advantage of replacing a missing tooth is it stops teeth on either side of the gap from shifting.
The dental crowns that are used to anchor the prosthetic tooth replacement are known as abutments. The prosthetic tooth replacement is called a pontic. If you do not want or are unable to have, dental implants a dental bridge is a great option to replace one or more missing teeth. There are three types of dental bridges available:
1. Cantilever Bridge
A cantilever bridge has one false tooth (pontic) which is attached to one crown (abutment).
2. Fixed Bridge
Generally consisting of three crowns joined together, one at each end covers your natural teeth and a crown in the middle replaces your missing tooth. Some bridges may actually be four, five or even more crowns joined together, designed to replace more than one of your missing teeth.
3. Adhesive Bridge
This bridge has a false tooth (the pontic) to which a metal or tooth coloured ‘wing’ is attached to a natural tooth on either side of the missing tooth. This type of bridge can have one or two wings.
Dental bridges can be made using all metal, tooth coloured (porcelain), or composite. Which material we use will depend on the type of bridge you need.
Like dental crowns, two appointments are necessary for dental bridge treatment:
The first appointment
This is similar to having dental crowns. Your teeth on either side of the gap will be prepared for dental crowns. Then your dentist will take an impression of the prepared teeth to create a model. This model will then be used to fabricate your restoration. While your bridge is being a fabricated a temporary bridge will be placed to protect the prepared teeth until your permanent bridge is ready.
The second appointment
Access Dental Care will contact you when your dental bridge is ready. During this appointment, the temporary bridge will be removed and the more permanent bridge will be placed to ensure it fits and looks natural. Once you and your Access Dental Care dentist are happy with the fit, it will be bonded into place.
As with all restorative dentistry, it is important you maintain optimal oral hygiene and visit us for regular check-ups.
