Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by making your teeth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque. If you lack fluoride in your diet you teeth will be prone to tooth decay and cavities.

The hard outer surface of your tooth is called enamel and contains mineral crystals. Plaque bacteria attack the enamel causing it to weaken: a process known as demineralisation. Minerals from food and water we consume, as well as the toothpaste we use, help strengthen enamel. These minerals include fluoride, calcium and phosphate. Strengthening your teeth with these minerals is known as remineralisation. This process is quickened by the addition of fluoride in toothpaste, water supply and/or a fluoride treatment.

Fluoride is important for developing teeth

For teeth to develop healthily and to prevent plaque-causing bacteria there are 4 ways fluoride can be taken:

Fluoride Treatment

Dental Anxiety

Children are at a higher risk of developing decay as the enamel on their baby teeth is thinner and softer, meaning they are not as protected. Access Dental Care in Perth, offer fluoride treatments to children who are either at a high risk of developing cavities or who already have several cavities.

However, this treatment is not only prescribed to children. Adults can also benefit from this treatment. One of our friendly dentists or hygienists can administer this treatment through a very simple process to help prevent tooth decay.

Fluoride Treatment

The Treatment Process

When you visit one of our three dental practices across Perth (Perth CBD, Bull Creek and Perth East) for a treatment we will explain the fluoride treatment to you in detail. The treatment starts with your teeth being cleaned to remove any food or staining. There are three ways to apply fluoride:

A fluoride varnish is painted onto the tooth surface.

Fluoride supplements are available

A high-concentrate fluoride foam or gel is placed into an arch-shaped dental tray placed on the teeth and left for the required time.

Your dental hygienist will discuss your options with you and give you advice on the best treatment for you and your family. If you are concerned about fluoride treatment or have further questions regarding the administration of fluoride, please do not hesitate to discuss this with your dentist or oral hygienist at your next appointment.
