Things To Do During Initial Consultation

During your initial consultation, our reception staff will ask you to complete a medical form.

Our dentist needs to be aware of your general state of health as this can often impact the condition of your teeth and gums and may affect medication such as anaesthetics and antibiotics we may use for you.

At your consultation, you will have the opportunity to discuss any dental concerns you may have, or how you would like your teeth improved.

Your dentist will give you a full oral assessment to help accurately plan which treatments would be best for the health of your mouth. During this examination we will be looking at:

Teeth and the way you bite

Original restorations: fillings, crowns, veneers

The health of your gums and surrounding bone around each tooth

Your tongue, throat, cheeks & lips for signs of oral cancer

Jaw joint evaluation

Dental X-rays will also be taken of your teeth to check for

Decay inside the tooth or between the teeth

Abscess or cysts on the roots of your teeth

Root positions

Bone loss

Once the examination is complete the dentist will discuss the findings with you.

Oral Hygiene

Oral Hygiene

In order to maintain good oral health you need to remove the daily build-up of plaque from all surfaces of your tooth:

Brushing your teeth twice a day, for two minutes each time. Ask your dentist which type of toothbrush is best for you, as many of us use brushes are too hard or too large.

Floss your teeth: flossing reaches the 30% of the tooth that a toothbrush cannot reach.

Have no bleeding when brushing or flossing

Have no tenderness or discomfort

If you don’t look after your teeth properly it can lead to the first stage of gum disease known as gingivitis. If left untreated gingivitis can lead to periodontal disease, the chronic form of the disease.

Periodontal disease

Periodontal disease

Gum disease comes in two stages: gingivitis and periodontist.

Gingivitis, characterized by inflamed gums and potential bleeding, and Periodontitis, marked by deeper inflammation, potential bone loss, and increased risk of tooth mobility.

Timely detection and proactive dental care are essential in preventing the progression to advanced stages.

Periodontal disease

What is Gingivitis?

What is Gingivitis

What is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is caused by plaque that collects in the small gaps between the gums and teeth. Symptoms of gingivitis include:

Bleeding when brushing or flossing

Soreness or discomfort of gums

Gums appearing red in colour, puffy or swollen

Unlike periodontal disease gingivitis is reversible. It should also be noted that not all gingivitis leads to periodontal disease.

What is Periodontal Disease?

What is Periodontal Disease

This is the later stage of gum disease and is when the bacterial infection under the gums progresses deeper and affects the bone and tissue supporting the tooth. Your gums will:

Bleed when brushing or flossing

Will be red swollen and tender

Cause bad breath

Pus may be seen in the pockets around the tooth.

The infection damages the tissue connecting the gums to the roots of the tooth. Once this tissue has been destroyed the gums pull away from the teeth, which forms pockets where the bacteria thrives in. Over time the bone anchoring the tooth in the jaw will dissolve, making the tooth loose. Eventually, your tooth will fall out.

What is Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is irreversible. All you can do is slow the progression with regular visits to Access Dental Care. One of our friendly dentists will give you a full oral assessment to help accurately plan which treatments would be best for the health of your mouth. During this examination, we will be looking at:

The health of your gums

Your tongue, cheeks, throat and lips for signs of oral cancer

Jaw joint evaluation

Once the examination is complete your dentist will explain the findings with you as well as a treatment plan. This plan will include all the benefits and risks of each procedure and the cost.
