Extractions and Access Dental Care

At Access Dental Care in Perth’s CBD and Bull Creek we consider the option of extraction as a last resort for most situations. We prioritise your natural teeth above any modern restorations, however in some instances extraction can be the most appropriate option. In every circumstance our dental professionals will work with our patients to try and identify an outcome that is best suited to the patient’s dental condition, their lifestyle and their budget.

Extractions

Dental extraction involves the removal of a tooth, which can be necessary for a number of different reasons. Before we extract a tooth we will take an x-ray and perform a comprehensive examination of your teeth. We can then discuss your options with you and identify if extraction is a necessary treatment for you. Some reasons you may require an extraction include:

Wisdom teeth can be problematic when they erupt, as there is no room in the dental arch to accommodate these new teeth. This can cause the teeth to shift into an undesirable option for both the health and appearance of your smile. These teeth can also cause dental infections and significant discomfort.

  • Tooth decay

Tooth decay must become quite severe in order to necessitate extraction. The tooth will usually be past the point of restoration via root canal therapy and the nerves will often be extremely damaged. Normally, in this case, the damaged tooth can pose a threat to the surrounding teeth, as well as to the jawbone, gum and soft tissues.

  • Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatment can require the removal of a tooth or teeth in order to correct the alignment of the bite and straighten the teeth. In order to make room for the teeth that need to be guided into place, sometimes other teeth will need to be removed.

  • Periodontal disease

Advanced gum disease, or periodontitis, can eventually damage the soft tissues, the bone and the tooth to the extent that the tooth becomes loose or seriously damaged.
Trauma to the teeth or some medical conditions can also create the need for a tooth extraction.
