Fluoride helps to strengthen teeth and prevent cavities.
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that can be applied to the teeth in order to strengthen them and make them more resistant to acid attacks. If you are considering a fluoride treatment, you might be wondering what benefits you can expect, and what the process involves. Read on to find out more about fluoride and how it can help to keep your teeth strong and healthy…
How does fluoride work?
A naturally occurring mineral, fluoride strengthens the enamel of the teeth, making it more resistant to acid attacks from plaque. When plaque attacks the enamel, the teeth weaken in a process known as demineralisation. It is, however, possible to strengthen the teeth in a process known as remineralisation by consuming minerals like calcium, phosphate and fluoride. Fluoride is particularly helpful in speeding up the remineralisation process, and can be found in toothpaste and some water sources, or it can be applied directly to the teeth as a specific treatment. Not only does fluoride restore minerals to the surfaces of the teeth, it also helps to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and reduces the risk of tooth decay.
Fluoride treatments can be beneficial for both adults and children. In fact, the earlier children are exposed to fluoride, the lower their chance of developing cavities.
What does the treatment involve?
Before the treatment process begins, your dentist will clean your teeth thoroughly in order to remove any stains. You will then be given three options — a fluoride varnish can be painted onto the surface of your teeth; a high concentrate foam or gel may be placed in a dental tray for you to wear for a certain length of time; or you can take fluoride supplements. The treatment that you choose will depend on your particular needs, and your dentist will be able to advise you on the option that suits you best.
Besides coming in for regular fluoride treatments, it is also a good idea to brush your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste. We recommend that you brush your teeth at least twice a day so that you can remove plaque and bacteria from your teeth and gums. Proper oral hygiene habits will go a long way in maintaining a strong and healthy smile.
Are there any side effects?
Although fluoride treatments are safe and effective, too much of the mineral can cause some side effects. These include white specks and stains on the teeth. An overdose of fluoride supplements can cause issues like nausea, diarrhoea, fatigue and excessive sweating. Be sure to discuss these potential side effects with your dentist if you have any concerns.
