How to take care of your teeth and gums over the holidays
The festive season is almost upon us, and while it’s a time for celebration and relaxation, it’s also essential that you don’t forget about your oral health. We’ve put together our top tips for maintaining oral health throughout the holidays. Read on to find out how to make sure your teeth and gums stay in good condition during the festive season…
Stick to your routine
You may have some time off work and enjoy a well-deserved break from your regular daily routines, but when it comes to your oral health, you must stick to a healthy regime. This means brushing your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes each time and flossing at least once a day. If you’re going to be out and about a lot, keep a toothbrush and a tube of toothpaste in your handbag so that you can keep your smile clean on your travels or day trips. It’s also helpful to keep a stash of sugar-free gum handy so that you can freshen up after meals and snacks when you’re not at home.
Be gentle on your teeth
Don’t use your teeth for anything other than eating — that means biting on ribbon, shelling nuts and pulling the cork out of the wine bottle. Being rough on your teeth can cause issues like chips and cracks. Another no-no is chewing on ice, which can also cause damage to your teeth.
Don’t overdo the sugar
It’s completely understandable to want to enjoy a sweet treat or two during the holidays, but just try to make sure that you don’t overdo it. Try and avoid constant snacking — the more time your teeth are exposed to sugar, the higher the risk of tooth decay. Rather than eating sugary snacks throughout the day, enjoy a single dessert as part of a meal, and brush your teeth afterwards. Try and avoid overeating hard candy, as these tend to stay in the mouth for long periods. It’s also a good idea to drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep hydrated and to flush away food debris.
Don’t skip your appointments
Even if you’re taking a break from work and other responsibilities over the festive season, be sure to honour any dental appointments that you have scheduled over the holidays. Don’t ignore oral health issues or put off check-ups for the new year — rather see your dentist as planned. Regular dental check-ups and cleans can go a long way in keeping your teeth and gums healthy and preventing the need for complex dental work in the future.
