The benefits of flossing

Flossing daily helps to get rid of plaque and prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

If you are committed to a strict oral hygiene routine, you will know that flossing plays an important role in keeping your teeth and gums in good condition. By flossing regularly, it is possible to remove plaque from between the teeth and along the gumline — this is important because when plaque builds up and hardens into tartar, issues like tooth decay and gum disease can occur. Read on to find out more about the benefits of flossing every day…

Flossing removes plaque

One of the best ways in which plaque can be removed from between the teeth and along the gumline on a daily basis is with regular flossing. Plaque is a sticky substance that forms when the bacteria in your mouth react with sugary and starchy foods and release acids that can damage the enamel of the teeth. It is important to remove these acids, because they can wear away at the teeth and lead to issues like cavities over time. Also, if plaque is left to accumulate, it can harden into tartar — tartar cannot be removed at home even with brushing and flossing, and increases one’s risk of gum disease.

Flossing reduces the risk of oral health issues

Regular flossing can go a long way in reducing one’s risk of serious health issues, including cavities and gum disease. If food particles and plaque are left between the teeth, there is the risk that tooth decay will occur. Tooth decay can then lead to cavities, which are small holes in the enamel. Cavities can cause pain and discomfort, as well as further deterioration of the teeth.

Gum disease can also occur when plaque is left to accumulate on the gumline. The condition causes inflammation and bleeding of the gums, and if left untreated, it can lead to a more advanced stage of infection known as periodontitis. Besides regular brushing and flossing, it’s also advisable that you see your dentist for regular cleanings in order to keep gum disease at bay.

Flossing resolves bad breath

If you suffer from bad breath, it’s well worth incorporating flossing into your daily routine. Whenever food particles get stuck between your teeth, they gradually decay over time. If left unremoved, these decaying particles can cause a bad odour. By flossing your teeth regularly, you will loosen and remove this debris, and reduce your risk of bad breath.

Flossing benefits overall health

Research shows that there is a strong connection between oral and overall health. In fact, some studies even suggest that good dental hygiene could actually benefit your heart health. Gum disease has been associated with a higher risk of developing heart disease, while poor oral health may also increase the risk of a bacterial infection in the blood stream, which can in turn affect the valves of the heart. In order to enjoy good oral health, as well as optimal general health, it is a good idea to practise good oral hygiene habits like flossing.
