Is teeth whitening safe?

Teeth whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments at the moment.

Everyone wants a healthy-looking, bright smile, so it’s easy to understand why so many people opt for cosmetic treatments to improve the appearance of their teeth. The teeth whitening process, which involves the use of a specially formulated gel, has become increasingly popular in recent years for its ability to produce effective results. But, is it really safe?

How to whiten teeth

Teeth become discoloured and stained over time, often as a result of eating and drinking foods and beverages that are highly pigmented — think tea, coffee, red wine, chocolate and dark berries. Smoking, ageing and certain medications are also common culprits. While many people turn to store-bought whitening treatments to brighten their teeth, we recommend that if you want to enhance your smile in a way that is both safe and effective, that you come in for a consultation. That way we will be able to assess your teeth properly, and let you know if whitening is a suitable option for you. Unfortunately, whitening treatments are not appropriate in all cases and we may advise against the process if you have gum disease or particularly sensitive teeth. We also don’t recommend the treatment for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

How to whiten teeth at home
Once you have been in for a consultation and your dentist has confirmed that whitening treatment is right for you, you have the option of using a home whitening kit. These kits are safe to use, but please do make sure that you follow your dentist’s directions for the best possible results. If you feel any sensitivity during the treatment, try wearing your custom-made whitening tray for a shorter period of time, and consider using a toothpaste that is specially formulated for sensitive teeth. If your sensitivity persists, we recommend that you come in and see us. Your dentist may adjust your treatment to better suit you.

Can you get your teeth whitened at the dentist?
If you prefer to have your teeth whitened at our practice, you are most welcome to come in for an in-office treatment. Many patients prefer this option because of the whole process is performed by a dental professional and you can rest assured that the treatment is completely safe. The procedure is actually relatively simple and takes between an hour or two to complete. Your dentist will make sure that your gums are protected during the treatment by using a rubber coating — this ensures that only your teeth are exposed to the whitening gel and laser light that is used.

The bottom line is that as long as you consult with a dental professional, whitening is a safe cosmetic procedure. With the right treatment, it is possible to achieve a brighter smile and reduce the appearance of stains and discolouration.
